Toyosi Olusanya admits St Mirren spell has transformed his career

The Londoner is in the form of his life with the Buddies and opened up on the changes he has made both on and off the pitch.

The 26-year-old striker signed for the Buddies in June 2022 but struggled to make an impact due to injury and a tough loan spell in the Championship with Arbroath. However, Olusanya played a key role as last season progressed — scoring seven goals as the Buddies finished fifth in the Premiership and qualified for the UEFA Conference League.

Saturday’s goal in the 2-2 draw with Dundee at Dens Park was his fourth already of this campaign as the in-form Londoner continues to improve. Olusanya is now one of the leading figures in the squad given his experience and the fact that he has grown in his time on Greenhill Road. The forward admits he leaves nothing to chance when it comes to match preparation and recovery — and will always feel he has a point to prove when he steps onto the pitch. There is also a dedicated St Mirren section that will follow every kick of the ball with the Buddies. He said: “Coming here, it has been transformative for me and I know I’ve got things to improve on constantly. “I’ve got things that I am good at and others I can be better at. Every day is a day to keep improving. I’ve seen how some of the boys are a good example of how I’m supposed to take the gym, how I’m supposed to take recovery. “But when I first came here, I’d probably say I was a bit like, ‘I’ll do it but not as well as I can’. “But now every opportunity I can get, I’m using my routine correctly, to get in the gym or focus on recovery; just to keep getting the best of myself. I feel like if I can get that extra one per cent, it makes a big difference. “When I was younger, it was just play a game and move on. I never really felt pains and niggles as such. “But I think I’ve learned a lot over the last two years. It’s important to stay on top of things — it’s part of being mature and growing within the game. That’s helped me to realise and understand my body. “Now, I can really understand it and know what to do on certain days and just to help me to keep going.” Olusanya looks back at his time with AFC Wimbledon when he thought he had cracked it — but that wasn’t the case. “I feel like that year when I was 18,” he reflected, “I probably thought I was the man, if you know what I mean. “I had a good season — I reckoned I played well — but it just goes to show that you can have an opinion of how you are doing yourself, but in reality people are looking at you differently. That was a humbling experience. “If you think you’re doing well, then you just need to keep the head down, because they might think otherwise.” Olusanya — who also had a spell at Middlesbrough and once had a trial at Chelsea — is grateful for the guidance of boss Stephen Robinson who he sees as a father figure. He said: “Definitely, in terms of just having someone that’s actually always looking out for me he’s been on my side and I appreciate it. Me and the gaffer get on really well. “Even when I was out injured, he was giving me coaching points and advice. He gives me a good balance and motivates me — and an arm around the shoulder if I need it. Meanwhile, Buddies youngster Gallagher Lennon has joined League One Annan Athletic on loan until the end of the season. St Mirren have a recall option in January.
