If the red carpet wants a moment, honey, will the younger Ms Ross serve it. Sometimes she wonders whether she’s taken it too far. ‘When I feel the most Mrs. Fucking. Ross is the star of the multi-award-winning networked American sitcom Black-ish. The show centres on the Johnson family, a post-millennial Cosbys who place the black American experience directly into the heart of middle America.
Ross comes from a line of innaterule-breakers. ‘I luckily come from a lineage of incredibly strong and powerful black women who didn’t use the path that existed as their template. My aunt as well. She’s a doctor, the first black dean of a medical school.’ She brushes her nails off her lapel. ‘She’s an extraordinary woman. But it did give me the inspiration for what I could be.
Now she wants to pass that opportunity down to her young audience. ‘Black-ish came in at a really special moment. We helped television make a turn. In terms of the kind of stories you could tell, there was a big gap. It was happening and then it just disappeared. Which is often the case with how our culture utilises black culture. We open the door, then it’s appropriated.’ She’s proud to be part of the turn around.
In both her major TV roles, previously as Joan Clayton in Girlfriends, Ross has played titled, scholarly, high-achieving yettotally relatable women. It’s important toher. ‘I think more than that, seeing womenwho are boldly themselves, who are telling their own stories and not in the contextof the men that are around them or even the situation around them, is incredibly important.
