Pierce County is getting more serious about embarking on a coordinated approach to addressing homelessness and recently convened representatives from more than a dozen cities to discuss how that would look.which prioritized a regional approach to solving the issue. Last week, the Pierce County Council and representatives from cities across the county met to talk about what a URA would look like. While some have raised concerns that it will be another layer of bureaucracy, advocates said it’s meant to identify a shared vision and an operating structure to more seamlessly respond to issues around homelessness.
The King County Regional Homelessness Authority has been in place for several years to better coordinate resources for people living on the streets but has struggled at times. Cities in south King County have been reluctant to contribute financially to the effort, philanthropic contributions have stalled, the initial CEO resigned and the agency has been late on paying its nonprofit contractors in the past.
