Scientists say seismic blasting in gas exploration can have subtle but critical effects on marine life as concerns rise over Woodside's Scarborough gas project in Western Australia's north.
Scientists say seismic surveys can impact marine animal's feeding, communication and migration habitsRaelene Cooper says proper consultation with traditional custodians wasn't carried out
Curtin University marine science professor Robert McCauley said the impacts of the surveys were not necessarily obvious, but they could be significant. "They could be pushed out of an area, and some of these seismic surveys can run for a very long time … so you could potentially push some whales out of that area for the whole year.
The approval of the seismic survey had conditions requiring additional Aboriginal consultation to be carried out before the activity began. Ms Cooper is seeking a judicial review of NOPSEMA's approval in the federal court, arguing traditional custodians had not been properly consulted. A Woodside spokesperson said the company had dedicated significant time and effort to its consultation process to ensure it met the requirements.
