Hiwa Ali Khani had dreams of getting married and having children. They were taken away from him by Joshua Boardman.
As he sat in his car on Raikes Road at around 6pm on July 8, Hiwa Ali Khani had no reason to believe anything was wrong.
Today , Boardman has been jailed for stabbing Hiwa to death. He will serve a minimum of 14 years and seven months. He later told police he thought she was pretty and she had told him she was 16. The following day, Mr Thornton texted the girl, arranging to pick her up from behind William Hill in Ribbleton Lane. At 6.13pm, he parked up behind Hiwa Al Khani’s car in Raikes Road, and texted to say he had arrived. He also tried to call the teenager.

Seeing the confrontation, he told his ex partner, who was on the phone: “S***, he’s got a f***ing knife!!”
At 6.40pm, still unaware he was the intended target, Mr Thornton tried to call the girl again. But Boardman answered the phone, saying: ““You see that, that was meant for you. Where are you? Where are you now? I will stab you in the f***ing chest.”Boardman was seen in a nearby street with his head in his hands. Just after 7pm he stopped a police officer and told him: “You need to arrest me. I’ve just stabbed someone.” He was physically shaking as he handed himself in.
Sentencing, the Honorary Recorder of Preston, Judge Robert Altham, said he did not need to make a finding of what, if anything, happened between Mr Thornton and the girl, in order to sentence Boardman for murder.
