'What an absolutely awfully tragic incident'
A much-loved mum died after falling from an upstairs window she had opened in order to get some fresh air.
Despite getting through the operation, doctors feared Mary's leg might have to be amputated. And although her condition was relatively stable, three days later she suddenly deteriorated. Mary knew she was dying and had told doctors she didn't want to be resuscitated. She died at 5.18pm on Wednesday, March 22.
The inquest heard that 78-year-old Mary had gone to sit on her windowsill, 15 foot from the ground, to get some fresh air before bed. She was conscious when her family found her but she was screaming in agony. Dr Emily Fielding, from the major trauma team at Salford Royal, said that when Mary arrived she was in a lot of pain. During the operation orthopaedic and plastic surgeons inserted a pin in Mary's leg and had to cut away dead tissue.
A CT scan showed signs of pneumonia and as Mary had pre-existing conditions including COPD and asthma, her lungs wouldn't have been able to clear any secretions which would have built up with her lying down for so long. The medical cause of death was given as pneumonia with multiple injuries, trauma from a fall, COPD and frailty listed as contributory factors.
