Tragic sinking of a ship that devastated Lancashire families during the First World War

Deep below the shadowy waters just off the Old Head of Kinsale in Ireland lie the remains of a tragedy that devastated our region just more than a century ago.

But it was a dangerous time to be on the Atlantic, and when the RMS Lusitania departed on her last, fateful voyage from New York to Liverpool on May 1, 1915, submarine warfare was on the rise. Germany had declared war on the seas around the UK and the German embassy in the United States had even warned in a newspaper of the dangers of sailing on board the Lusitania.

Only six of the Lusitania’s 48 lifeboats launched successfully, with the rest either splitting or capsizing, hurling their desperate occupants into the water. Two hundred seamen from Liverpool died. "We ran up the road. A pork butcher’s had had its front window knocked in with a brick and a crowd of men and women were wrecking the place. A little higher up the same thing was happening – everything suggestive of Germany was being smashed to pieces."
