At 80 years old, William Gwyn Thomas has worked as a train cleaner for more than 25 years and has no plans to retire! 🚂 'I really love it, and I’ll finish when I’m ready and when I feel I can’t do it as well.’
An 80-year-old man who cleans trains for a living says he has no plans to hang up his broom just yet.Often working into the early hours of the morning, Gwyn, of Lampeter, Ceredigion, is part of a team that cleans up to 26 carriages every night.: ‘I didn’t expect I’d still be working at 80. But I really love it, and I’ll finish when I’m ready and when I feel I can’t do it as well.’
Speaking about how he’s been able to keep up his work ethic at such a late age, he says the key is ‘eating well, not drinking anything stronger than a shandy and cutting down on smoking.’Today, he has three children, three grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. But even on harder days, he says ‘that’s the job and we just have to get on with it’
Mr Thomas and his team usually start work around 7.30pm, and generally don’t finish until after two in the morning. Their task is to clean each carriage in its entirety from the cabs and toilets to the tables and floors. But the nonplussed octogenarian says it’s just something to get on with. ‘It’s annoying but there’s no point moaning about it because that’s the job and we just have to get on with it,’ he said.
