New guidance for schools on dealing with transgender issues will be published by the Government in the summer, following concerns that pupils are able switch gender pronouns without their parents being informed
, the former education secretary, said the research highlighted a “growing body of evidence demonstrating that urgent attention needs to be paid to the ways children are being impacted by gender identity beliefs”.
The DfE has been working on transgender guidance for schools over the past year amid calls for clarity on how leaders should respond to “complex and sensitive” matters around pupils’ gender identity. It is understood that the guidance has now been expedited in light of the new research by Policy Exchange and growing pressure from experts to address the issue., said schools are trying “very hard to be sensitive to the needs of pupils questioning their gender identity” but that they are being forced to do so “in the context of a public minefield of strongly held and opposing views”.
