Disruption this week will be huge. So why are there strikes?
A Tube strike is bad enough on its own, but combine it with a rail strike and you can see why it is expected to be the largest strike since 1989.At the heart of both of these disputes is the government wanting both Transport for London and Network Rail to change and make savings. Why are savings necessary? The government says the impact of the pandemic means transport needs to reshape itself to deal with the new reality.
It also says the taxpayer has had to step in to keep the railways running "at a cost of £16bn, equivalent to £600 per household".Just look at what the government tried to doThere were many, many strikes, and eventually commuters could not rely on Southern for a service.
