Thousands of parents in Spain are joining a campaign to stop their children having phones until they are 16
The movement, spread via WhatsApp and Telegram groups, sprang up in Catalonia under the name Adolescents Free of Mobiles but has attracted thousands of people acrossof Greystones banding together to prevent their children having smartphones until secondary school – and the country’s health minister recommending it as a national policy.
Ms Solé said there were different views over what could be done to prevent their children becoming addicted to their phones. In a poll of parents in Barcelona, 70 per cent said they did not want their children to have phones until they were 16, and only 10 per cent thought this was too old. Her daughter is not amused. “I have been waiting patiently to be 12 so that I can get a smartphone but I can’t have it until I am 16. How unfair is that!” she toldTo show how keen she is to have one, Maria drew a picture of a mobile phone on a piece of cardboard.
