A search and rescue operation is underway in Assam, India, after a coal mine flooded, trapping several workers. One body has been recovered, while eight others remain missing. Divers and rescue teams are working to access the flooded mine. Authorities suspect the operation may be illegal.

An ongoing search for workers trapped in a flooded coal mine in the industrial town of Umrangshu in Assam , India, has recovered one body, while eight others remain missing. The body recovered from the well has been identified as Sri Ganga Bahadur Srestho from Udayapur district, Nepal, the chief minister of Assam , Himanta Biswa Sarma, wrote on X on January 8.

Sarma shared the news of the trapped miners on X on January 6 and through a string of updates announced that Navy deep divers had been mobilised, along with the army, the State Disaster Response Force, and the National Disaster Response Force. Reuters reported officials as saying the mine, 300 feet deep with multiple underground tunnels, is thought to have flooded on January 6 after miners hit a water source. Sarma said on January 7 that the water level inside the mine had risen to nearly 100 feet. 'The rescue operation is in full swing with Army and NDRF divers having already entered the well,' he said on January 8. 'Navy personnel are on-site, making final preparations to dive in after them.'Meanwhile, SDRF de-watering pumps have departed from Umrangshu for the location.'Additionally, the ONGC de-watering pump has been loaded onto the MI-17 helicopter at Kumbhigram, awaiting weather clearance for deployment,' he said. The Assam chief minister said 21 para-divers were involved in recovering the deceased worker. One of the divers reportedly said to local media, 'We didn't see the body, it was completely dark inside, we felt a body using our hands, and that's how we were able to rescue them'. On January 7, he said police were investigating the incident, with suspicions that it's an illegal operation. One person has reportedly been arrested in relation to the case
