‘Traumatic’ process for complaints about MPs can feel worse than bullying, Parliamentary staffers say
David Barker, now a Labour councillor, told the programme he was horrified that an evidence bundle including his private medical notes were disclosed to the MP he made a bullying complaint about.
A spokesperson for the ICGS said both parties are entitled to see evidence, but accepted a mistake was made and said it had issued an apology to Mr Barker., who said he was “profoundly sorry” for the distress he caused Mr Baker, was handed a two-day suspension from Parliament last year. Ms Nichols said: “The main issue with it is the amount of time it takes to resolve these cases, which can often be years. The person you’ve complained about can carry on right up until the final report. Alongside the time it takes to resolve these cases is the lack of effective sanctions.”
A House of Commons spokesperson said: “We recognise and acknowledge the impact to individuals who have raised difficult and traumatic complaints, and it is vitally important that all parties are provided with support throughout the complaints process. New investigators have been recruited to the ICGS and given updated and clear guidelines on timescales. A new role has been recruited to within the team, which has specific responsibility for guiding and supporting those involved.
