Travellers in and out of Melbourne Airport have been warned to prepare for delays later this week as refullers prepare to strike.

The Transport Workers' Union has notified Rivet that its workers, who predominantly refuel Qantas planes, plan to strike over increased pay and better conditions.Freight companies Australia Air Express and DHL, alongside international carriers Singapore Airlines, Qatar and Cathay can also expect delays.

TWU Assistant Branch secretary Mem Suleyman said workers tried avoiding disruption to flights but after 12 months of tense negotiations were forced to strike to reach a “fair agreement”. “These are workers in one of the most dangerous jobs in the airport, yet they are being pushed to the limit while pay and conditions fail to attract more workers to share the load.

“Aviation was decimated throughout the pandemic, but Alan Joyce is now gloating about a $1 billion half-year profit while overworked aviation workers getting Qantas planes refuelled and into the air are struggling under the pressure.”
