Australian brewers are calling for a pause on beer taxes, saying the inflation-linked increases are pushing smaller businesses to the brink.
Sam Fischer, Chief Executive of Lion, one of the largest brewers in the country, said the cost is particularly impacting regional and rural pubs and clubs. However, Treasurer Jim Chalmers all but ruled out any relief in the upcoming budget when he was asked about reports that the federal taxes currently equate to around $20 per slab.Australian brewers are calling on the federal government to pause inflation-linked beer taxes.
"We can't afford to do all of the things that are proposed to us in a budget, not just that idea but other ideas are put to us pretty regularly, multiple times a day and we don't want to give people false hope about the things that we can't afford to do," he said."I think we are up-front about that. Sometimes to our own detriment but our priorities lay elsewhere in this budget."The Federal Budget will be handed down on Tuesday night.
