Nottingham's Trent Bridge, a historic landmark, requires urgent improvements to its lighting, safety barriers, and cycling infrastructure, according to city councillor Steve Battlemuch.
Nottingham's iconic Trent Bridge, a structure built in 1871 and carrying approximately 50,000 vehicles daily, requires urgent upgrades, according to city councillor Steve Battlemuch. While the bridge underwent extensive maintenance in 2020, celebrating its 150th anniversary, Battlemuch asserts that further improvements are crucial. Specifically, he calls for better lighting on both sides of the bridge, reminiscent of other prominent bridges nationwide.
He also criticizes the current anti-terror barriers installed in 2017, deeming them an eyesore due to graffiti and suggesting their removal or replacement with bollards or appropriate coverings. Battlemuch acknowledges the growing concerns of cyclists regarding the lack of dedicated lanes around Trent Bridge and proposes consulting with cycling experts to address this issue. The bridge's high traffic volume, combined with pedestrian congestion during sporting events at Nottingham Forest's City Ground and Nottinghamshire's Trent Bridge Cricket Ground, necessitates comprehensive safety measures. He stresses the importance of finding the right balance between accommodating vehicular traffic, pedestrians, and cyclists. The steel and concrete safety barriers were installed in 2017 following government recommendations to enhance pedestrian safety in the wake of terror attacks in London, including the Westminster Bridge incident. Nottingham City Council, as the sole trustee of the Bridge Estate charity which maintains Trent Bridge, will continue exploring funding options for future improvements. Battlemuch believes that enhancing the bridge's external lighting, estimated to cost hundreds of thousands, would be a justifiable use of the charity's funds, assuring that taxpayer money would not be involved.
