Olga Mary Mulderrig, a beloved primary school teacher known for her dedication to nurturing young talent, has passed away at the age of 89. Mulderrig taught renowned actresses Julie Hesmondhalgh and Mina Anwar, recognizing their unique abilities and guiding them in their early careers.

Tribute s have been paid to an inspirational teacher who dedicated her life to drawing out young people’s talents and nurturing their development. Olga Mary Mulderrig, who was a class teacher with a specialisation in drama at Hyndburn Park Primary School, passed away from pneumonia on Wednesday, September 4, aged 89.

“She was well read and intelligent and interested in drawing out other people’s stories and their interests. She wanted to encourage and foster other people’s interests in literature which she loved so much.“Being an only child herself, it mattered to her that she had a big family and she was proud of our achievements. Since she passed away we have been overwhelmed with people’s fond memories and expressions of love.

“The one who makes you feel seen, the one who gets you. In her class, I started writing poems, and I did the English Speaking Board exams, which were my first foray into acting. “As it happens, I learnt that poem by heart aged nine and still know most of it – a pretty big feat for a little girl, and completely down to Mrs Mulderrig’s confidence in me. What a woman, what a teacher, what a loss.Olga was born to parents Jack and Mary Riley in Haslingden and raised on Grane Road. She tragically lost her dad when she was a baby so her extended family played big part in her upbringing and she was surrounded by lots of loving aunties and uncles.

Desmond was Olga’s twin flame and they shared a great love for the arts including opera and spent many years going to hundreds of operas both in the UK and overseas. He was a history teacher at Holy Family secondary school in Accrington and later became the deputy headteacher. Olga won various accolades for her involvement in theatre including a prize for her all female production of A Room in The Tower. She took an 11 year break while she was raising her children Catherine, Bridget, Matthew and Jane and gave elocution lessons to people in Rossendale.
