'Sad news, truly the voice of The Aces for me'
Tributes have poured in for the long-standing announcer of the Belle Vue Speedway - Kenneth ‘Ken’ Wrench. The venue announced that the ‘voice of the Speedway’ sadly passed away aged 91 on April 11 at Stepping Hill Hospital after a short illness.READ MORE: When to see the iconic Spitfire over Greater Manchester
In a statement shared online, Belle Vue wrote: “Belle Vue Speedway is sad to announce that the voice of Speedway, Ken Wrench, died peacefully on 11th April 2024 at Stepping Hill Hospital after a short illness. “Ken worked for the BBC for many years and was widely known as our club announcer for an incredible 41 years.“His funeral will take place at Rowan Chapel, Stockport Crematorium on May 3rd at 10.45am.
“All are then welcome, and invited to the Alma Court, Buxton Road - 3 miles down the road - for drinks and food in a very informal small celebration of Ken’s life.Reacting to the sad news online, one woman wrote: “My everlasting memories of Belle Vue at Hyde Road stadium was the voice of the one and only Ken Wrench. RIP Ken.”
Ian Lewis wrote: “Whenever I think back to those exciting days at Hyde Road watching the Aces the welcoming knowledgeable voice of Ken Wrench immediately floods into my ears. Thank you Ken.”
