Barbara came up with the ingenious idea of the Ramsbottom Soroptimists appearing on BBC2 show Eggheads where they won £9,000
Heartfelt tributes have been made to a devoted teacher who was ‘full of the joy of life’ and dedicated her life to nurturing the development of children. Barbara Hallam from Haslingden passed away on August 31 at Warrington Hospital, at the age of 86.
“Her hobbies were related to helping others and she loved spending time with her family. She just loved children and was a natural teacher full of enthusiasm and she was very dedicated.” The great-grandmother-of-five spent 80 of her 86 years living in Helmshore and then in 2021 she moved to Cheshire with Geoff. She loved playing cards with her family and she was a great supporter of Water Aid and NSPCC.
She organised concerts, pantomimes, keep fit classes and outings. The church would hold multiple shows such as Ken Dodd and the Diddymen with Barbara’s help. She later became president of the Ramsbottom branch too. Lesley Pritchard, the social/events secretary of the Ramsbottom branch, said: “Barbara was full of enthusiasm, energy and commitment.
“Past pupils loved to keep in touch with her and that speaks volumes. Barbara will be terribly missed. She was a beacon of light.”
