Friends said Paul Smith 'someone who enjoyed life and he loved people'
Tributes have been paid to a well respected Lancashire parish priest who was a strong pillar of the community and devoted his life to helping others. Paul Smith passed away on July 1 after a short illness at Preston Royal Hospital, aged 69.
Paul was born to parents Fred and Audrey Smith and was a brother to Ruth. He grew up on Stanhill Lane in Oswaldtwistle and studied law at the University of Durham and worked for Midland Bank in Accrington.Paul’s friend of nearly 40 years, Canon John Hall, said: “He will be missed as a good and loyal friend and very wise man to have around. He was someone who enjoyed life and he loved people.
John, who has retired from being the vicar of Fleetwood, continued: “People at the hospice thought the world of him and now he has died, they talk of a world that is less bright because he’s not here.”Paul and Ruth married in 1983 at St Matthew’s Church in Burnley and lived in Rishton for 18 years. They raised their two children, Eleanor and James and became proud grandparents to Hattie, Hector and Elijah.
