Troy's top returning receiver, Chris Lewis, announced Tuesday he will miss the 2024 season while continuing his recovery from a malignant tumor which was discovered in a mass behind his left knee in December.
Troy football released the information on its X social media account with a message from Lewis:"Trojan Nation, Thank you so much for your calls, messages, Tweets, DMs and love over the past six months; I can't express how much your support has meant to me and my family. "There is nothing more that I want than to be back in The Vet this fall, wearing Cardinal and White and playing side-by-side with my brothers. Unfortunately, the effects of my treatments will not allow me to suit up and play during the 2024 season.
"However, my story is nowhere near complete, and I am blessed to announce that I am returning to campus this fall and will get to run out of the tunnel at the Vet as a student assistant coach.The mass was diagnosed as osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, which was discovered following an MRI after Troy's win in the Sun Belt Championship game.
As a transfer from Kentucky before last season, Lewis led the Trojans with 735 yards in catches as a sophomore, including 10 touchdowns.
