There was further evidence of good will on Sunday morning when Israel reopened two border crossings with the Palestinian enclave.
However, as thousands of people began to assemble at five different locations along the 30-mile fence to vent their frustration at Israel, Israeli forces on the other side appeared relatively relaxed as they watched and waited for any attempts against the barrier. An Israeli officer told me that for the first time Hamas had deployed men in orange vests to help control the crowds and prevent them from moving within 300m of the fence.
As the crowds grew - Israeli Defence Force estimates put the final figure at around 40,000 - efforts by Hamas to keep the crowds back slipped slightly, with people moving towards the barrier, prompting Israeli forces to open fire. Three Palestinian teenagers were killed, according to medical officials in Gaza. Scores more people were said to have been wounded. The casualties, explosives and gunfire meant the demonstration by no means passed off peacefully. However, the scale of the violence was far less than had been feared.
After the demonstration ended, Israeli forces said several rockets were fired into Israel from Gaza. The military responded with tanks, firing at a"number of" Hamas military posts. The aftermath of an Israeli strike on Gaza City, launched after a rocket wounded seven people in Israel on Monday
