On Friday, the Kremlin had said that Putin was ready to resume contact with the president-elect but that it did not mean he would alter Moscow’s demands. For several years before this the Russian president repeatedly denied Ukraine, which was formerly part of the Soviet Union, its own statehood. According to Statista research, European Union institutions, such as the Commission and the EU Council, provided over £32bn in bilateral financial, humanitarian, and military aid to Kyiv and the US has given it £62bn worth of aid.
