As questions mount about the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump, NBC News has learned that the alleged shooter was spotted before he got on the roof and that rallygoers noticed him “pacing and behaving strangely” near metal detectors, according to four officials. NBC’s Stephanie Gosk reports for TODAY.

An investigation is ongoing after a gunman opened fire on former President Donald Trump at a rally Saturday in Butler, Pennsylvania, injuring him.

More than a dozen guns were found in a search of the Crooks family home, four senior officials told NBC News.Secret Service Director Kimberly A. Cheatle acknowledged that"the buck stops with me" and that the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump"should have never happened" in an interview with ABC's"Good Morning America" that aired today.

He said the building the shooter fired from had a sloped roof, making the securing of it challenging, so a decision was made to put people inside the building. Secret Service was tasked with securing that inner perimeter, while local law enforcement was responsible for the outer perimeter he said. He spent 10 years in the U.S. Army Reserves and was chief of the Buffalo Volunteer Fire Department in the early 2000s."His courage was not the loud and boisterous kind; it was the courage of quiet resilience, the strength to be vulnerable, and the bravery to lead with love," the obituary said.
