Under President Trump's administration, the US is rapidly deporting illegal migrants using military aircraft and forging agreements with countries around the world. This intensified effort highlights the administration's strong stance on immigration.
Seven countries have agreed to accept deported illegal migrants under President Donald Trump 's administration, less than two weeks after he took office. Trump has intensified the deportation efforts, utilizing the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, a military aircraft typically used for tactical and strategic airlift missions, to transport deportees. The Pentagon has increased flights to expedite the removal of over 5,000 immigrants held by US authorities in El Paso, Texas, and San Diego, California.
While deportation flights occurred under the Biden administration as well, Trump's approach has seen rapid agreements with nations. US Border Patrol special operations supervisor Hamid Nikseresht emphasized the strong message conveyed by using the military aircraft for deportations. He stated, 'With the support of our Department of Defense partners, we’re sending the message that if it takes you 30, 60, or 90 days in some cases, to come to the United States illegally, enter, once you’re found amenable to removal under Title 8, we can have you back in your home country within seven hours.' Mexico initially refused to allow US military aircraft deporting migrants to land in the country. However, President Claudia Sheinbaum agreed to reinforce the northern border with 10,000 members of Mexico's National Guard. The situation highlighted tensions surrounding Trump's immigration policies. Colombia initially blocked two US military aircraft carrying their citizens from landing, but reversed their stance after Trump threatened tariffs. Bogota subsequently sent two military planes to repatriate their nationals from San Diego and Houston. In a significant development, El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele agreed to accept deportees of any nationality, including convicted criminals, for a 'relatively low' fee. This agreement, hailed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio as 'unprecedented, extraordinary', goes beyond typical deportation agreements. Bukele even offered to accept some of America's most dangerous criminals currently incarcerated in the US, despite their US citizenship or legal residency. The farthest destination for these deportation flights is India, where a US military plane transported migrants on Monday. This action coincided with an invitation for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the White House the following week. The US and India are significant trading partners, with bilateral trade exceeding $118 billion in 2023-24.
