“It’s entirely possible he would say something and wouldn’t care about the conventions of not interfering,” he said. “We’re doing it because we think collective security makes us more secure, as well as the Europeans. Trump just doesn’t understand that.” He is widely known for his hawkish foreign-policy views. He backed the invasion of Iraq and has argued for US military action to achieve regime change in Iran, Cuba and North Korea.

Mr Bolton remains proud of scuppering the agreement. An ardent hawk, he believes the US should have gone further by trying to oust the hardline Islamic regime in Tehran. In 2016, for example, Mr Bolton was rumoured to be a candidate to serve as Mr Trump’s secretary of state. However, the election winner reportedly decided against this because he disliked Mr Bolton’s moustache.
Bolton said she told of how her children “had been intimidated by Maduro’s thugs, how the wife of the chief of staff had seen her husband dragged out of their home and put in prison.” It was a very grave and serious discussion.
