Sir Keir Starmer has tried to play down the row, saying the “straightforward” arrangement had happened in the past and that those involved were doing it “in their spare time” as “volunteers”. Sir Peter, who was UK ambassador to the US between 2012 and 2016, suggested that Trump’s campaign were making hay out of the incident because of Vladimir Putin’s interference in the 2016 presidential election on behalf of the Republicans.“Of course it’s catnip for the Trump campaign to accuse a foreign power of intervening, given the history of Russian involvement in political campaigns on Donald Trump’s behalf.
“This is Trump’s campaign doing what campaigns do, creating controversy during an election,” he told BBC Sheffield.
