Donald Trump has pleaded not guilty to 37 federal charges of mishandling classified documents, paving the way for a potential trial in the middle of an election campaign and the explosive possibility of a jail conviction.

Nine weeks after he was indicted in a Manhattan court over a state-based probe involving alleged hush money paid to a porn star, Trump has once again made history, this time being arraigned in a Miami court on charges brought by the federal government.

“We most certainly enter a plea of not guilty,” his lawyer Todd Blanche told magistrate judge Jonathan Goodman. Another woman donned a Make American Great Again cap and T-shirt and held up a picture of Barack Obama, insisting he was the one “pulling the strings” for Biden in the White House. And one man had arrived from California. He was wearing a top hat and red tailcoat while carrying a “Trump DeSantis 2024” corflute – a reference to Florida governor Ron DeSantis, who is also vying for the Republican nomination.

They included information relating to nuclear programs and military vulnerabilities, to intelligence that should have only been shared with the “Five Eyes” countries, including Australia. His supporters, who had lined the streets for hours, screamed and waved as the former president gave them the thumbs-up while he passed. One anti-Trump protester dressed in prison garb was detained by authorities after trying to chase down the presidential motorcade.

The charges were brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith, who was hired by Federal Attorney General Merrick Garland to take over the case from the department after Trump announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination in November. This was done to ensure the department was at arms’ length from the case, given Garland was a Biden appointee.
