President Donald Trump has reversed course and announced a 30-day pause on proposed 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico. This follows phone calls with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, during which both leaders agreed to collaborate on border security measures, including deploying additional troops to combat fentanyl trafficking. Trump also indicated that negotiations will continue to address trade imbalances and other concerns.

Donald Trump has confirmed he will pause proposed 25% tariffs on imports from Canada for 30 days in a dramatic u-turn following a phone call with Trudeau. The president was on course to implement the 25% tariffs on goods imported from Canada and Mexico from Saturday - a move that is forecast to dramatically impact on the US economy. However, on Monday, Trump announced an initial 30 day pause on the Mexico tariff after speaking with the leader Claudia Sheinbaum.

“We’ll be announcing the tariffs on Canada and Mexico for a number of reasons,” Trump told reporters as he signed executive orders and answered questions about the deadly airplane collision in Washington D.C.“Number one is the people that have poured into our country so horribly and so much. Number two are the drugs, fentanyl and everything else that have come into the country. Number three are the massive subsidies that we’re giving to Canada and to Mexico in the form of deficits,” he said.
