The Republican party controlled both chambers in both 2017 and 2018 during Trump's first term
The decision comes as the Republican Party wins control of the US congress, granting Trump’s party a triumvirate of power between the presidency, House of Representatives and the Senate.
The Florida senator was one of 15 Republican senators to vote against a $95bn foreign aid package to Ukraine this week, the final vote which passed the aid for Kyiv after months of debate and delay. Staunch Trump ally Matt Gaetz has been named attorney general, while former Democrat Tulsi Gabbard has been chosen by Trump as director of national intelligence.
All Trump’s nominations still need to be confirmed by the Senate. Given the Republican majority, this is not expected to present the President-elect with any issues.
