| Donald Trump’s campaign team called it “one of the most out-of-touch” launches in modern history, while the masses on Twitter dubbed it “#DeSaster”. It’s hard to refute.

DeSantis, the slick Harvard and Yale educated lawyer and naval officer, has sunk in the polls over the past two months after a series of conservative and controversial policies in Florida, and a public feud with entertainment giant Walt Disney. He and his team obviously wanted both a big and unusual launch to help catapult the campaign. They took a big risk and arguably failed.

But Mick Mulvaney, Trump’s former chief of staff, said the strategy was probably worth doing, if only it had worked. DeSantis also has the advantage of having a platform as governor of Florida, which he has used to propel himself further afield.
