The economic and travel sanctions targeting people who work on the ICC investigations of US citizens or US allies such as Israel
and former defence minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes in Gaza, which they vehemently deny, plus Hamas leaders.
In January, the US House of Representatives voted to sanction the ICC – in response the court said it “regrets any attempts to undermine the court’s independence, integrity and impartiality”. Russia has also taken aim at the court. In 2023, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for President Vladimir Putin, accusing him of the war crime of illegally deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine. Russia has banned entry to ICC chief prosecutor Karim Khan and placed him and two ICC judges on its wanted list.
