Putin will enter with a strong position after the US laid out a generous opening hand. Ukraine will not join Nato, Ukraine can forget about regaining Crimea and there will be no US troops on the ground.

US President Donald Trump went over the heads of Ukraine and European allies and spoke directly to Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday. If the call is enough to bring the Russian president to the negotiating table, Putin will enter with a strong position after the US laid out a generous opening hand.

No wonder Nato defence ministers arriving in Brussels this morning were scrambling to find a united line. Returning to pre-2014 Ukraine borders is “unrealistic,” and “chasing this illusionary goal will only prolong the war and cause more suffering”, said Pete Hegseth. Last summer, Nato allies agreed that Ukraine was on an “irreversible path to full Euro-Atlantic integration”. The Trump administration has, at best, placed that ambition on ice.

“There is no betrayal”, said the US defense secretary, “there is a recognition that the whole world and the United States is invested in and interested in peace, a negotiated peace”.“In a few years we will be in a situation where Russia, with the speed that it is developing its defence industry and its army, is going to move forward,” warned Lithuania’s Defence Minister, Dovilė Šakalienė, this morning.
