The president unveiling a predecessor’s presidential portrait is a tradition stretching back decades, and also sees a painting of the former first lady unveiled at the same time.Obama and his wife Michelle chose an artist – whose identity remains a secret – before quitting the address in January 2017. They will have sat for him or her afterwards in anticipation of their paintings being added to the wall of the historical address.
Past presidents have buried political differences and acted warmly towards one another during the ceremonies, with Obama welcoming his predecessor George W Bush to have he and wife Laura’s portraits unveiled in 2012.
