The new Conservative growth group is the latest Tory pressure group and its organisers want to push for Sunak to adopt more pro-growth policies

, he wants to adopt a steady as you go approach, with Treasury sources keen to suggest no tax cuts in the Spring Budget. Meanwhile, in No 10 there is an appetite for no risky votes that expose a lack of Tory unity. That puts the group on a collision course with ministers, no matter what they profess.

As one Government source puts it on hearing about the group: “Thomas Edison famously tried, and failed, 8,000 times to perfect his battery invention. In fairness, he got there in the end. That said, we all know Einstein’s quote on the definition of insanity.” That definition, of course, is “doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results”.

But the growth group is just one part of Sunak’s MP problem. They are merely the latest batch of MPs that risk causing Sunak problems in the coming months. The Prime Minister has so far tried to avoid conflict where possible. Conscious of the fact he has no mandate from the public or even the Tory membership, Sunak has tried to manage his party as a coalition of competing factions.

It means when potential rebellions have arisen, he has tried to find a compromise rather than face them down – with risk of punishment if they rebelled. The positive is Sunak hasn’t suffered a Commons defeat yet. The downside is that he is allowing his agenda to be reshaped in ways he had not planned. Even if No 10 believes the compromises so far are minor, it’s only a matter of time until a more unappetising proposal comes on the table that sweet talk won’t fix.
