Man United defender Harry Maguire has defended his winning record whenever he has started for the club recently.
When you see Harry Maguire claiming he has a 'ridiculously high' winning record when starting at Manchester United, your first instinct may well be to scoff. However, he does have a point, at least partly.
Maguire opted to stay and it's a good job given the defensive injury crisis which has hit the squad, giving him an unlikely reprieve in the starting XI. Now away on England duty, Maguire has been bullish in defending his record and performances in his recent starts. "But I'm just wanting to help the team, I'm wanting to help the team get out of this position we're in at the moment. Hopefully we can do that in the coming weeks."
So Maguire is right, his win rate is rather good, even 'ridiculously high' if skewed in a favourable light, but it does ignore some important context. Of his last 14 wins, six have come in the early rounds of domestic cup competitions where the pressure is not as intense and he's usually been against second-string sides. Two games were even against EFL clubs. Another winning start came in the Europa League against Real Betis when United were already 4-1 up after the first leg.
