I can heartily recommend making 2023 the year of new friends 🔵 Say yes to everything, ask more questions than you answer and regard anyone you meet as a potential new friend ✒️ RebeccaCNReid for ipaperviews
Rebecca Reid: ‘For the majority of this year, I have said “yes please” to everyone I met’
The first time I really tried to make new friends, it was Freshers Week at university. I was nervous about lots of things . But the one thing I wasn’t worried about was finding some mates. I’d always beenSix weeks later I had discovered a very sad truth. Making friends as an adult is very, very hard. Even at university, where people ostensibly want to make new friends, it’s tricky.
But life doesn’t work that way. People grow, change and move – and if you don’t replace them in your life, you end up lonely. In 2022 I found myself living in a part of London I barely knew, with a small baby, and no mates. And so, I had to do something terrifying: override my edict about not making any new friends and make an actual effort.
Someone once told me that if you move abroad and you don’t want to be lonely, you have to say yes to everyone and everything, no matter how weird or unappealing. Invited to a bull riding convention? Saddle up. A gluten free vegan barbecue? Pass the alfalfa sprouts. Bell ringing? Colour me a campanologist.
So that’s what I did. For the majority of this year, I have said “yes please” to everyone I met. I joined groups, asked friends to introduce me to anyone they knew in my local area, pitched up at playgroups, playgrounds and playdates. When someone asked me out for a work drink, I went. Any whiff of a party, and I was there. Worst of all, I forced myself to talk to people I didn’t know at social events and then follow up with them afterwards.
