A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck the coast of the Indonesian island Sumatra on Tuesday morning, quickly sparking fears of a tsunami.
The epicentre of the quake - which hit at 3am local time - was 84km underwater, triggering automatic tsunami warnings for the island.
"People left their homes. Some were panicking but under control," said Abdul, a local from Padang which was the largest city hit by the earthquake.The magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Picture: Google Maps The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre had earlier rated the quake at a magnitude of 6.9, with the epicentre 199km west of Padang and 172km southwest of Pariaman - both major cities on Sumatra.
