A Tufts University student experienced a harrowing end to winter break at her home in Southern California due to the raging wildfires. Kylie McNulty, a native of Malibu, and her family prepared to evacuate their home if the flames came too close. McNulty described witnessing the fire approaching from the mountains while driving on the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). Initially, she didn't think much of it, as wildfires are common in the area.
However, she soon realized the severity of the situation when she found the PCH closed due to the Palisades Fire. She spent several days in her home without power or reliable communication, her fire bag packed and ready for evacuation. McNulty's home was spared, but she was shaken when she finally received news about the extent of the fire's destruction. She had been at Palisades Village just three days before the fires erupted, enjoying an ice cream outing. The thought of the iconic landmarks being consumed by flames was unimaginable to her. She described the feeling of driving down PCH and not recognizing the familiar surroundings, the landmarks she knew so well now gone. The fires have left a profound impact on her, and she expressed her disbelief that such devastation could occur in a place she once considered safe and secure.Despite the ongoing threat, McNulty witnessed a remarkable spirit of resilience and unity among her community. Efforts are underway to support those affected by the fires, and she hopes that people who see her story will consider donating to relief efforts or spreading the word about ways to help. Another individual impacted by the fires is James Michael Cummings, a Massachusetts native who lives in Los Angeles. He had to evacuate his home and drove through the night to reach his family in Las Vegas as the fires raged around him.
