Former Democratic congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard is being considered as a vice presidential candidate by former President Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Gabbard represented the state’s 2nd Congressional District for four terms and ran for president in 2020 as a Democrat before leaving the Democratic Party in 2022. Since then, Gabbard has identified herself as an independent and has criticized the Biden administration, often taking conservative stances on matters such as abortion and transgender rights. Most recently, she has garnered attention from Kennedy and Trump, who have teased various vice presidential picks within the last month.
However, sources said that while Gabbard would have seriously considered being Kennedy’s running mate, she is more interested in the possibility of being considered for a Trump ticket.a list of possible vice presidential candidates, which included Gabbard, and said, “They’re all good, they’re all solid.”
“I think most people on Team Trump view her as someone who ultimately won’t be picked as VP but could end up with a different role when all is said and done,” an adviser to people in Trump’s orbit said. Gabbard told Fox News host Jesse Watters earlier this month that she was open to the possibility of being Trump’s vice presidential pick. While Gabbard’s position as an independent who leans more conservative could be an attractive quality in a vice president to both presidential candidates, Gabbard’s run for the presidency in 2020 could get her removed from Trump’s list, as sources close to the former president said he doesn’t want to choose someone with ambitions to be president.
A spokesperson for Gabbard told NBC News that questions surrounding her interest in being vice president for Trump or Kennedy are “premature.”
