More than 4,700 deaths have been recorded in Syria and Turkey after two earthquakes struck the countries yesterday.In Syria, 733 have died in rebel-held areas and 656 in government-controlled regions.Patients have been left to die in a Turkish government hospital deserted by medical staff, Sky News' understands.

She said patients remain inside the area's main government hospital which has been partially destroyed. She continued:"We saw crowds of people looting one of the supermarts saying that they were hungry, they had nowhere to stay, no homes, no food, and crucially no help at the moment - that is the constant message that we're getting from the people in this area."'Hundreds of families' remain trapped under the rubble

Humanitarian assistance and aid has been sent by the UK, US, Germany, France, Poland, Japan, Mexico, Italy, Spain, Russia and China. In the southern province of Hatay a woman's voice was heard calling for help under a pile of rubble. Nearby, the body of a small child lay lifeless.A resident who gave his name as Deniz said:"They're making noises but nobody is coming.

Margarita Segou, a seismologist with the British Geological Survey, said that most strong earthquakes such as this occur underwater. On top of that, the epicenter was near Gaziantep, a major city and heavily populated provincial capital in Turkey.
