Moto GP: Francesco Bagnaia has held off Martin to claim his eighth win of the Moto GP season in Japan.
Marc Marquez isn’t going to win the 2024 MotoGP world championship . But there’s a strong chance he’s about to have a say in who does.
Marquez’s 2019 win in Australia for Honda was his third MotoGP success at Phillip Island. Even with most of his past five years being injured, recovering from surgeries or riding a recalcitrant Honda before his switch to Ducati for 2024, Marquez’s MotoGP career stats – 185 starts, 61 wins, 109 podiums, six world titles – already ensure he’ll go down as one of the best to ever do it.
It’s no wonder when, much earlier in his career at the Austrian Grand Prix of 2018 when the riders assembled in the pre-event press conference were given the chance to draw their ideal track, Marquez grinned as he scribbled an oval with an arrow indicating an anti-clockwise circuit and wrote “left corners and very slippery”.
“For sure circuits on the left are a specialty of mine … I’m always able to find something extra but with the Island, it’s a track where the rider can really make a lot of difference,” Marquez told this author for the Australian Grand Prix official event program in 2023, joking that his record of hero or zero Island results was like a light switch, “on or off”.
Without that result, and knowing that he was no longer the inhibiting factor in his career moving on from the anguish of Jerez 2020, he may not have been as convinced to sever a decade-long relationship with Honda, a partnership where he enjoyed so much success until his repeated injury-enforced absences saw the Japanese brand fall behind Yamaha and then Ducati as MotoGP’s benchmark factory, and sink to MotoGP’s basement since he left.
