Grove Hill Memorial is closing one of rural south Alabama's last birthing units; East Alabama Medical Center-Lanier will become a Rural Emergency Hospital.
Two Alabama hospitals have announced plans to end inpatient services and convert to Rural Emergency Hospitals, which will close one of the last birthing units in rural south Alabama.
The closure will leave a large swath of south Alabama without access to labor and delivery services. Women will have to travel to Selma, Montgomery, Mobile or Bay Minette. In an article published on the Valley Times website on Wednesday, executive vice president Greg Nichols said the hospital has an average of six inpatients a day. Nichols told the newspaper he expects the “final switch” to be made within six months.The Rural Emergency Hospital program was created to combat rural hospital closures across the country. It comes with additional financial support from federal agencies. Rural Emergency Hospitals receive $267,408.
