Pro-Palestine rally in Texas ends with two arrests amid Nakba anniversary commemoration, May 19, 2024 that took place Sunday ended up in the arrest of two protesters, according to organizers.
Pro-Palestine supporters came out in droves Sunday afternoon for a hours-long protest and march. Despite the more than 130 protestors being arrested at previous rallies at the University of Texas at Austin, and despite being criticized for hosting violent, disruptive protests, pro-Palestine demonstrators stood their ground.
Organizers say they were there to commemorate the 76th anniversary of the Nakba, which is when over half of the Palestinian population was displaced from their homelands. They say the Texas Department of Public Safety says it notified them just days before of the protest of an unexpected closure of the Capitol grounds.
