BREAKING: Nine people were killed after two Black Hawk helicopters collided in Kentucky during a training exercise on Wednesday night.
The crash occurred around 10.00pm on Wednesday night. The two aircraft took off from Fort Campbell on the border of Kentucky and Tennessee. They collided about 30 miles away in Trigg County.
According to a spokesperson, the aircraft were flying a ‘multi-ship formation, 2 ships, using night vision goggles.’ One helicopter carried five crew members, while the other carried four.There were no civilian casualties or damage to civilian buildings near the crash site. ‘Luckily, they were able to land in an open field across from a residential area,’ a Fort Campbell spokesperson said.
The identities of the nine crewmembers were not released while Army officials work to notify their next-of-kin. They did confirm that all nine servicemembers were based at Fort Campbell. ‘Today is a tough, and a tragic day for Kentucky, for Fort Campbell, and the 101st,’ Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said on Thursday morning.
