Two Chicago residents were arrested after scamming a victim by pretending to be from the United States Justice Department, according to deputies.
Deputies say that 24-year-old Akber Mohammed and 31-year-old Mateen Mohammed, are both accused of defrauding a person of $300,000 in a computer scam. According to deputies, they said both men pretended to be from the United States Justice Department and claiming the victim's computer was hacked. Mount Morris, N.Y. — Once there, they spoke to someone who said they were scammed out of around $300,000.
Deputies arrested 31-year-old Mateen Mohammed and 24-year-old Akber Mohammed, both of Chicago on May 30. According to deputies, both men allegedly told the victim that they were from the United States Justice Department and that their computer had been hacked. The fraud scheme included someone purchasing precious metals and gems and informing the victim that a courier would come to their house and pick up the items, according to deputies.
Both men were charged with felony attempted grand larceny in the second degree, conspiracy in the fifth degree, and petit larceny. They were both transported to the Livingston County Jail, where they were both released on their recognizance.“This is sadly another example of just how extreme bail reform measures have been gone,” said Doughtery.
