The Scottish government says scrapping the two-child benefit cap will lift thousands of children out of poverty

Scotland has pledged to axe the two-child benefit cap, giving a financial boost to many low-income families. And the Scottish government says the move will lift around 15,000 children out of poverty.

The cap limits the amount of financial support families with more than two children can claim. It means parents can’t get the child element of Universal Credit or Tax Credits for their third or additional children. The cap applies to children born after April 2017. ‘Let me be crystal clear, this government is to end the two-child cap and in doing so will lift over 15,000 Scottish children out of poverty,’ she said.‘We will work as hard as possible in 2025 so we can start paying families in 2026,’ she said. ‘The cap will be scrapped.’Will the two-child benefit cap be axed in the rest of the UK? Prime minister Sir Keir Starmer has been under pressure to ban the cap since Labour came to power in July.

The charity Child Poverty Action Group said the Scottish government has made the right decision. And they have called on Westminster to ‘step up’.
