A man and woman have died after their car rolled down an embankment and into a creek near the Queensland and New South Wales northwest border. Police divers and investigators were called to Carwal Creek Bridge on Morialta Rd, south of Mungindi in Queensland, where the SUV crashed and became submerged, trapping three people. A 23-year-old woman who was in the car was rescued by friends and a local property owner. She was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition after 1.
NSW Police said friends of the woman rushed to the bridge when they realised the SUV was no longer following their car. They found the crash scene and managed to help the woman out of the car, but two others could not be rescued. About 12pm Sunday, the bodies of a man and woman, both aged in their 20s, were recovered from the submerged vehicle. They are yet to be formally identified.
