Labour has committed to bringing forward Martyn's Law, named after a Manchester Arena bombing victim, and extend Awaab's Law
Their lives were lost in unthinkable circumstances. But their tragic deaths will now both lead to lasting to change.
It comes less than two months after Rishi Sunak met with Martyn's mum Figen Murray who walked 200 miles from Manchester to London on the seventh anniversary of the Manchester Arena attack. He told her that Martyn's Law would be passed by the summer, but hours later, the then Prime Minister called a general election which meant Parliament shut down before for the bill went through.
But she urged MPs to pass the law as soon as possible. She said: "We've been campaigning for over five and a half years now. Awaab's Law is already on the statute books after being rubber-stamped by the King last year. It sets strict timeframes for landlords of social housing to inspect and repair damp and mould, with those who fail to meet these deadlines facing the risk of being prosecuted.
"For far too long people up and down the country have been living in terrible conditions, and families have been left ignored and feeling powerless. Our Renters’ Rights Bill will give people back their voice, ensuring they have a safe place to live, with the full force of the law behind them.
