Raphael Varane and Casemiro supposedly yearned for Zinedine Zidane's leadership at Manchester United last season.
The Athletic reported last season how Varane – who has since left United and retired – and experienced Brazilian star Casemiro were dissatisfied with the positional and physical demands Ten Hag was placing on them. The pair, who won numerous major titles with Real Madrid, were said to have expressed to their United team-mates a preference for Zidane's less hands-on and laid-back style from their time in Madrid.
But despite their poor showings in front of goal, Ten Hag was still a picture of positivity after the Villa draw before the international break. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "We created loads of chances in our seven games but we have to step up.
